This February, I celebrated my 42nd year living on this planet and the beginning of a new chapter in my life. After two decades of service with Pittsburgh Mercy, I decided to take a leap of faith and continue my journey with another organization!
While the last few months have been mixed with emotion, as I reflect on this extraordinary journey, rather than thinking of it as ending, I’ve been thinking of it as a new beginning – one where I’ll carry what the Sisters of Mercy taught me about courage, justice, integrity, service to people and well, mercy (the ultimate act of kindness and compassion). So, I thought I would share the wisdom of Mercy so graciously shared with me.
I learned the importance of laying aside the troubles and burdens we carry every day and finding courage to acknowledge the human condition and serve others…
I learned to represent peace; that we can provide sound direction to people around us and offer gentle guidance when there may be distortions and confusion about what’s important…
In a world that says we need to assert ourselves to be ‘strong’ and grab the bull by the horns to make a difference, I learned to find confidence and wisdom in working together, in being patient and gently teaching and learning from each other…
I learned to be good listener; recognizing that I don’t have to know it all and that we need help from each other (and our critics) to gain perspective and to learn…
I learned to be quick to hear, open to reason, and easily persuaded by good sense, argument, and rationale…
I learned what it means to receive mercy (the ultimate act of kindness and compassion) and how to give mercy to others…
I learned the importance of sincerity - that in a world of spin, posturing, and deception, that it’s important to serve people by the open statement of the truth (however difficult that might be).
I’ll be forever grateful for my time at Mercy!!
