I usually work with a handful of clients each year and usually for an extended period of time. I like to think of my clients as partners and I typically don't get hired to make spreadsheets or project plans. While I WILL make spreadsheets and project plans, my clients hire me to help them care for their missions and their organizations.
I generally like to offer engagement 'packages'. They allow for us to have a clearer timeline and help to better manage resources (time, people, and money). The engagements can flow linearly (one to the next) OR you can select whichever makes the most sense for your particular situation.
The evaluation engagement is for the organization looking for direction.
Typical deliverables during an evaluation engagement include a risk assessment, department assessment, compliance program assessments, or a road map for implementation.
The evaluation engagement is typically (1) month of work together.
The implementation engagement is for the organization with a clear set of priorities but requires assistance in translating the program from paper to operations.
Typical deliverables during this type of engagement might include designing and resourcing a compliance work plan, designing the internal audit function, and benchmarking service infrastructure.
Given the scope of this work, the engagement is typically a minimum of (3) months of work together.
The project engagement is for the organization that has a particular opportunity or problem they've identified and needs support designing a solution or shepherding the project from planning to execution.
This work is customizable but typically begins with a defined problem, a clear scope, and/or a specific deliverable.
This timeline for this type of engagement is variable depending on the complexity of the challenge or the project.
